چکیده

A new type of cosmic-ray experiment is under construction in the Pyhäsalmi mine in the underground laboratory of the University of Oulu, Finland. It aims to study the composition of cosmic rays at and above the knee region. The experiment, called EMMA, will cover approximately 150 m of detector area. The array is capable of measuring the multiplicity and the lateral distribution of underground muons, and the arrival direction of the air shower. The full-size detector is expected to run by the end of 2007.

Underground muon events detected by the MACRO experiment at Gran Sasso have been studied for different purposes. The studies include the vertical muon intensity measurement, multiplicity distribution, lateral and angular muon distribution and searches for substructures inside muon bundles. These analyses have contributed to bring new insights in cosmic ray physics, in particular in the framewor...

Simulation of Cosmic Ray Muon Flux at Shallow Depths Underground

Geant4 has been used to estimate the rate, energy spectrum and angular distribution of cosmic ray muons at underground depths between 300 and 1000 m.w.e. The results agree well with those from the MUSIC program when the same surface spectrum is used. Care has been taken to use a parameterization of the surface spectrum which agrees well with data for the relevant energies. 1 Goals Knowledge of ...

Predicting Neutron Production from Cosmic-ray Muons

Fast neutrons from cosmic-ray muons are an important background to underground low energy experiments. The estimate of such background is often hampered by the difficulty of measuring and calculating neutron production with sufficient accuracy. Indeed substantial disagreement exists between the different analytical calculations performed so far, while data reported by different experiments is n...

On-site underground background measurements for the KASKA reactor-neutrino experiment

On-site underground background measurements were performed for the planned reactor-neutrino oscillation experiment KASKA at Kashiwazaki-Kariwa nuclear power station in Niigata, Japan. A small-diameter boring hole was excavated down to 70m underground level, and a detector unit for γ-ray and cosmic-muon measurements was placed at various depths to take data. The data were analyzed to obtain abun...

30TH INTERNATIONAL COSMIC RAY CONFERENCE MINOS Observations of Shadowing in the Muon Flux Underground

A high significance observation of two muon signals, the shadow of the sun and moon, have been seen by the 5.4 kt MINOS Far Detector, at a depth of 2070 mwe. The distribution of angular separation of muons near the moon was well described by a Gaussian, which was used to determine the angular resolution (0.34◦ ± 0.07◦) and pointing (0.3◦ ± 0.05◦) of the detector. Introduction & Motivation The M...
